Breaking Down the Age Barrier: ProQuest-CSA backs Silver Surfer's Day

Cambridge, UK. May 12, 2004

You're never too old to learn! That's the message from ProQuest-CSA, which is throwing its support behind Silver Surfer's Day, on Friday, May 21.

Silver Surfer's Day aims to give people in the UK - silver-haired or not - who are over the age of 50, a 'taster' of what email and the Internet are all about.

As a sponsor of the event, ProQuest-CSA will be offering free trials of its unique online service KnowUK in libraries across the UK. People are encouraged to drop in for a byte-size introduction to IT.

KnowUK offers a complete collection of current, useful and UK specific reference information which appeals to all ages. Users can look up anything from this year's events being featured at Edinburgh Festival, to Home Secretary David Blunkett's address, tourist information on Swansea, or even access guides on early retirement.

Now in its third year, Silver Surfer's Day is a national celebration of older people's achievements on the Internet and is hosted by Hairnet UK Ltd as part of National Adult Learners' Week.

KnowUK launches Local Information Pages

Cambridge, UK. January 2003

ProQuest-CSA (formerly Chadwyck-Healey) adds Local Information Pages to its flagship library reference resource, KnowUK.

Since its launch in 1999, KnowUK has given visitors to public libraries all over the United Kingdom the power to cross-search over 90 of the UK's most popular reference resources, including titles like Who's Who, The Municipal Yearbook and Hutchinson Almanac. The launch of Local Information Pages extends the scope of the service, by giving access to local information on one hundred of largest towns in the UK, plus all the London Boroughs. Users can find basic information about the area, a zoomable map of the town, links to local services and facilities and access to selected local websites. The coverage of Local Information Pages will be extended to Scotland and further regions in the United Kingdom in January 2003 and up to 1,000 cities and towns will be covered by the end of 2003.

Tom Jackson, KnowUK Publisher said "Local Information Pages adds a new dimension to KnowUK and gives our users the power to find authoritative information on both a national and regional level. Someone thinking of taking a holiday, for example, can decide where to go by searching a series of Blue or Which? Guides and now find out where to stay, what to do and which events are taking place through our local information pages. This makes KnowUK a much more rounded service for library users all over the United Kingdom".
