Blue Guide Country Houses of England

This Blue Guide, published in 1994, covers nearly 400 historic country houses in England. The county by county descriptions include most of the country houses regularly open to the public. There are full details of the architects, artists and craftsmen who worked on the houses as well as histories of the families who have owned them. Privately owned properties are covered as well as those run by the National Trust and English Heritage.

The authors are both architectural historians; Geoffrey Tyack is Director of the Stanford University Centre in Oxford. His other publications include Sir James Pennethorne and the Making of Victorian London, Oxford: An Architectural Guide, and Warwickshire Country Houses. Stephen Brindle is an Inspector of Ancient Monuments and Historic Buildings in the Central Government and Palaces Branch.

Blue Guides have long enjoyed a reputation as authoritative, accurate and detailed guidebooks. The series began with Blue Guide London in 1918. Findlay Muirhead, experienced English-language editor of the German-originated Baedeker guides, established the Blue Guides with his brother James, after the outbreak of the First World War meant the end of his association with the German firm. They decided to bind the books in blue to distinguish them from their red-jacketed rivals, Baedekers and Murray’s Handbooks. Blue Guides Limited, a Somerset Books company, continues the tradition of publishing excellent guidebooks that respect the heritage of the Blue Guide series.

There are now more than 60 Blue Guides covering a wide range of destinations - countries, cities, and regions. With their special focus on art, architecture, and history, Blue Guides offer a unique combination of the practical and scholarly. Detailed and authoritative, the result of many years' careful research, they feature walks around towns, cities, and sites, full coverage of museums and galleries, as well as recommendations for where to stay, eat and drink, and advice on the best routes for travelling by car or by public transport. Blue Guides are produced in an easy to use format, with high quality, detailed maps and plans, and comprehensive indexes.
