Sheltered Housing and Care Homes for Older People
These two directories include information on over 45,000 nursing homes, residential care homes and housing developments in the UK. Sheltered Housing includes information on where the accommodation is, who owns it, how large the development is and
of what type, whether it is available to rent or buy, costs per week, additional facilities, type of support offered, distances to
local services and whether pets are allowed. Care Homes for Older People includes information on where the accommodation is, whether
personal or nursing care is offered, who owns it, how many people can be accommodated, whether it is a short stay or long stay
facility, medical conditions cared for (mental and/or physical disabilities), costs, additional facilities and distances to local
services.
All care homes in the Directory are registered with, and regularly inspected by, the National Care Standards Commission.
The Elderly Accomodation Counsel
This information is provided to KnowUK on an annual basis by the Elderly Accommodation Counsel (EAC) which is an independent charity founded in 1985 to provide information, guidance and advice on all forms of accommodation for older people.
The thought of moving is stressful at the best of times. But for the elderly who feel a need to change their lifestyle, it can be traumatic. And for relatives, friends, or carers involved in the decisions, the responsibility may be a heavy one. The decision as to which type of home to apply for will, in many cases, depend on a medical report. The EAC can advise and give general guidance on the degree of care offered by homes in the area of your choice and help you to find one which is suitable. They can also advise on possible sources of top-up funding if statutory benefits available do not fully cover the fees in a home.
